Christen James is a performer

Christen James is a Kiwi (New Zealander) performer / artist who has Immense passion for vocals and music.

At a young age Christen was always told to be quiet, but that all changed when at age 14 he found his voice in a high school class music production. Christen was put with about 3 other people sharing a mic and banging away on a tambourine and would sing along to the song. After a few weeks of practice went by the teacher stopped the production got up from the piano and handed the mic over to Christen to become the solo singer in the act. He couldn’t believe it but from then on, he knew he had a special gift, which he wanted to share with his audience.

Christen’s music is driven by the great joy he finds in connection with his audience. Having spent his life engaging with the public in both his singing and his other love in life – developing people in his role with an international airline. Christen enjoys creating an environment where people want to engage and feel empowered to share their own skills and experiences. He is willing to learn from others and take on new challenges, which he uses to bring this knowledge and experience back to his team in both of his professional roles.

Christen believes that music finds a home in bringing people together and has particularly enjoyed sharing his gift at occasions that celebrate belonging. For Christen belonging and connection starts firmly in the strong bonds of family. When he started to sing, he always thought what his Poppa (Grandfather) would say as being a touch old school in thinking he had the framing that men don’t sing and dance they play rugby, or so Christen thought! “I invited all my family members along including my Poppa to my first concert ever and least to say I was very nervous and worried, the opinion of my family has always been a driving force for me. I remember sitting at the stage door waiting for my turn to go on and I was not comfortable at all. I said to myself let’s just do this and if all else fails then at least you tried.

I walked out and the feeling was unbelievable. I picked up the mic and got into it. That feeling of having an audience there and them responding and joining me in the moment is a feeling that money can’t buy. After the concert I saw my poppa and immediately thought I’m going to get a lecture but to my surprise I got the complete opposite. He turned to me with tears in his eyes and said “ you need to do something with that”.

Christen continued to “do something with that” gift and since his early singing experiences he has been professionally trained in New Zealand and the UK. Christen has been lucky enough to perform in the cast of Showbiz Canterbury’s Stephen Sondheim Sweeny Todd as an ensemble member and other productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, weddings, private functions,

So where to next? Christen is about to embark on a massive project which will see him working on his first ever album and a release date of November 2020. He explains that he doesn’t want to give too much away yet, but he is very much looking forward to the journey ahead and having my first ever album, It’s something he’s always wanted to do and now the time is right.
